Before each new import, the extension asks you to confirm the transfer. It reads the character profile, greeting, avatar and instructions available to your Character.AI session. When importing from a chat, it also reads that selected conversation's text, alternative replies, timestamps, pins, accessible memory and selected persona. It does not import every chat in your account. Audio, image attachments and Character.AI's internal model memory are not imported. The extension does not bypass access restrictions or recover hidden instructions.
The chosen data is transferred over HTTPS to your signed-in Charms account. Imported characters and archives are private. Charms uses Railway to host its API, Supabase to store account-linked import archives, and Cloudflare for network delivery and avatar storage. These providers process the data needed to provide the import service.
When the original advanced instructions are unavailable, Charms sends the accessible profile, greeting and a bounded sample of the selected conversation to OpenRouter and Google, using Google's Gemini model through Google AI Studio or Vertex AI. The sample includes user and character messages: up to the first 12, last 24 and latest 12 pinned messages, deduplicated and limited to 24,000 characters of conversation text. This creates an editable personality (Soul); it does not recover the original hidden instructions. The original archive stays intact. Importing does not automatically send the full archive to Honcho. Continuing to chat uses Charms' normal chat and memory services, described in the Charms privacy policy.
Character.AI authentication is observed locally inside its browser page to read the data your session can access. Those credentials are never transmitted to Charms, written to extension storage or logged. The extension does not read Charms credentials; the website uses its existing authenticated session. The chosen export is temporarily stored in local IndexedDB to support retries. Successful transfers are removed locally; expired transfers are deleted after 24 hours when the extension next runs. Completed imports leave only source-to-destination identifiers, without chat text or credentials, so Open in Charms can reopen the existing import. These references remain until the extension is uninstalled.
Private archives remain stored with your Charms account. Uninstalling the extension removes local extension storage, but does not delete data already imported into Charms. Requesting account deletion queues a deletion request; it does not immediately erase imported archives. Contact [email protected] to request deletion of imported data.
Data obtained through the extension is used only to provide and maintain the disclosed import and character-continuation features, consistent with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. The extension does not sell data, use it for advertising, creditworthiness or lending, or collect general browsing history. The extension contains no analytics, advertisements or remotely executed code. These statements about extension analytics do not describe all analytics used by the separate Charms website.
