How memory works in AI character conversations

A conversation feels more personal when you can pick up where you left off. Charms supports persistent character memory to help carry shared context forward. You still shape that context together: clear details and occasional corrections make a continuing story easier to follow.

Context is the information available for the current reply. Memory helps useful information from earlier interactions remain available later. Neither is a word-for-word guarantee that everything you have said will appear in a future answer. A character can keep the broad thread while missing a specific detail. For an important scene, briefly restate the facts it needs.

Give a detail a reason to matter
Introduce one useful detail at a time and explain its place in your conversation. A recurring destination in a fictional journey is easier to use when you say who is going there and why. Keep story facts consistent. If you change a name or setting, make the change explicit instead of expecting the character to infer which version you mean.
Correct mistakes without restarting the story
When a character mixes up a detail, identify the mistake and give the correct version. Then continue with the next question or scene. Avoid repeatedly testing memory with vague questions: a clear reminder is usually more useful for progressing the conversation. AI can still generate an incorrect answer, so check facts that matter outside the fictional story.
Try a continuity check
Choose an invented destination for a shared journey. Explain why it matters, continue the conversation, and return to it later with a short reminder. Compare what stays consistent and clarify one missed detail before moving the story forward.
Keep public identity separate from personal context
A public character profile helps other people discover its identity. It is not a public transcript of your conversations. Keep personal information out of the character’s public description and only share details you are comfortable providing in a chat. Read the Charms privacy policy for how information is handled.
