How to chat with AI characters: your first conversation

You do not need a perfect prompt to start an AI character chat. Pick a personality that interests you, give the conversation a small direction and respond to what the character says. This guide takes you from browsing a profile to a conversation you can continue.

Open Discover and read a public character’s description. Look for an interest, personality or point of view you want to explore. A thoughtful guide, a creative partner and a playful storyteller offer different starting points. Choose one for a particular conversation rather than trying to find a character that can be everything at once.

Write a first message that gives something to answer
A greeting is fine, but a little context makes the next turn easier. Mention a topic, say how much detail you want and ask one question. For example, tell a creative character you want an idea for a small weekend project. Keep your request in your own language; Charms supports English, Spanish and Portuguese.
Shape the pace through the next reply
Read the reply, respond to one part and add a follow-up question. Ask for shorter answers or a different tone if that would help. When a reply misunderstands you, explain what you meant. If you start a fictional scene, make your role clear. Treat generated information as something to check before relying on it outside the conversation.
Try one opening
Choose one topic, give one sentence of context and ask one question. Then respond to the answer rather than writing a whole script in advance.
Return with a useful reminder
When you come back, mention the thread you want to continue instead of reopening with a completely vague question. Character memory helps carry useful context forward, but it is not perfect recall. You can remind the character of your project or correct a detail. If you want a more specific personality, the next step is to create your own character.
