Looking for a Character.AI alternative? What to know before you switch

By the Charms team
People look for another place to talk with characters for different reasons: ads, more control over a character they love, or a story they want to keep alive. Charms is a character app with personality and memory, without ads, in English, Spanish and Portuguese. You do not have to start from zero: you can bring a character and its chat from Character.AI with a free tool. Charms is an independent app, not affiliated with Character.AI.
Looking for a Character.AI alternative? What to know before you switch

Decide what you want to keep

Before you switch, list the characters and stories that matter to you. A character you talk to every day, a long roleplay or a persona you built are worth bringing. Characters you only tried once can stay behind; in Charms you can meet new ones or create your own.

Your next three steps

1. Choose
Pick the story you care about.
2. Bring
Import it with the Chrome extension.
3. Continue
Send a message that picks up the thread.

Bring your characters with you

With the Charms extension for Chrome on a computer, open a character or a chat on character.ai and click Bring to Charms. The character arrives private in your account with its greeting and, from a chat, the conversation you had open. Then continue on any device, your phone included. The import guide explains each step and what is and is not copied.
A message to test the switch

Write something only this character would understand, so you can tell whether its voice made the trip.

Continue your story

Last time you told me about your plan to leave the city. Did you go through with it?

Chat without ads

Charms has no ads in conversations. That is not the same as unlimited free use: there are usage allowances, credits and subscription options. Check what is included in the app before a paid action.

Personality and memory

Each character has a personality you can review and edit. Memory helps a character carry useful details from your conversations into later ones, and an imported story becomes memories gradually. Memory is not perfect: if a character misses an important detail, remind it briefly and keep going.

Try one character first

Start with the character you care about most. Import it, send a message that continues your story and see whether the voice feels right. If something feels off, adjust its personality. When it feels like home, bring the rest.
